Explosive Quarterly Performance
Cambricon Technologies, often referred to in trading circles as “China’s Nvidia,” has reported a monumental third-quarter earnings performance, according to financial reports analyzed by Bloomberg and Forbes. The Beijing-based AI chipmaker reportedly saw quarterly revenue surge approximately 14-fold year-over-year, transforming a substantial net loss into a $79.6 million profit – representing a 1,332% improvement from the same period last year.

Sources indicate the company’s stock responded dramatically to the earnings announcement, climbing 15% through Wednesday following the report. This market reaction reportedly added approximately $2.4 billion to CEO Chen Tianshi’s net worth, elevating his total fortune to around $24.1 billion and securing his position as the 94th richest person globally, according to wealth tracking data.
Geopolitical Context and Market Dynamics
Analysts suggest Cambricon’s dramatic turnaround reflects broader trends in China’s technology sector amid escalating trade restrictions. Since 2022, the United States has banned exports of advanced AI chips to China, including Nvidia’s highest-performance models. While Nvidia received approval to sell a specifically-designed lower-performance chip for the Chinese market, reports indicate Beijing has raised security concerns and advised domestic companies to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor technology.
As Bloomberg analyst Rachel Yeo observed, Cambricon’s success represents “one of the starkest signs yet of how China’s chipmakers are benefiting from a national drive to replace restricted Nvidia Corp. gear during a domestic AI development boom.” This strategic shift has reportedly created significant opportunities for Chinese chip manufacturers developing domestic alternatives to American semiconductors.
Company Background and Trajectory
Cambricon was founded in 2016 by brothers Chen Tianshi and Chen Yunji as a spinoff from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where both previously worked as researchers. According to biographical information, both brothers participated in an elite program for gifted youth at the University of Science and Technology of China, with Tianshi earning his doctorate in computer science before age 25.
The company went public on Shanghai’s STAR Market in July 2020, with shares reportedly surging 230% on their debut. After seven consecutive years of annual losses through 2023, sources indicate Cambricon achieved its first quarterly profit in late 2024, marking a significant milestone in the company’s financial history.
Competitive Landscape and Production Challenges
Cambricon reportedly supplies AI chips to major Chinese technology firms including Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu. However, analysts suggest Huawei currently dominates the Chinese AI chip market, having shipped between 300,000 and 400,000 of its Ascend AI chips last year compared to Cambricon’s approximately 10,000 units.
Despite this production gap, market observers project Cambricon could potentially deliver 80,000 units through the remainder of 2025, with the possibility of doubling that output in 2026 if production constraints can be addressed.
The company faces significant challenges, however. Cambricon was added to the U.S. Entity List in December 2022, restricting access to American technology and advanced manufacturing processes. Production limitations and low chip yields reportedly remain concerns, with analysts noting the company’s full-year capacity may be insufficient to meet demand from even a single large client.
In August, the company reportedly issued a risk warning to investors, acknowledging its share price was significantly outpacing industry peers and that its valuation might have diverged from current fundamentals, suggesting potential volatility ahead despite the recent explosive growth.
